Cruising Around Kailua
As many of you may have noticed, there are two newly placed bicycle racks located in Kailua Town. However, these bicycle racks are unlike any other. What makes them different you ask? Well these silver racks are filled with brand new cruiser bicycles, equipped with high tech features, just waiting to be ridden. When I first saw them I was a bit confused until I read an article by PBN which introduces the new program that the Department of Health and Kaneohe Ranch has created along with help of Hawaii B-Cycle.
Basically, they have launched a “bike-sharing” program that will allow people to borrow or use the bikes for a short period of time and then return them to their rightful place, being one of the slots on rack. Borrows of these cruisers are granted the first half hour free and then will be charged $2.50 for every additional half hour. Naturally, users have a few rental options. They are able to rent the bikes using either a one-day pass ($5), a monthly pass ($30), or a yearly pass ($50), however riders are only able to purchase the daily passes at the stations. In order to obtain a monthly or yearly pass, one must visit the Hawaii B-Cycles website (http://hawaii.bcycle.com/home.aspx) and purchase one online. This program was created to promote physically activity, a healthy lifestyle, and will hopefully help to cut down some of Kailua’s afternoon traffic.
The program will officially be unveiled this Friday, May 20th, 2011 at 10:30am. During this time, the program developers and leaders will demonstrate how to use the stations and how the system works. All in all, if you are ever walking around Kailua Town, check out these bikes and give them a try. One station is located at 767 Kailua Road while the other is located at 515 Kailua Road. Now go out and enjoy our unique Town while cruising on a cruiser, but please remember to return the bikes and share with the community!
